It all began with a woman, a dream and four skincare products…and the rest, as they say is history. But history that became beauty industry legend. At the start of her journey Mrs. Lauder was a woman armed with only the drive to work hard, the determination to succeed and a passion for beauty. And succeed she did – transforming beauty into big business.
In 1946, with her husband Joseph, she launched the Estée Lauder brand with only 4 skincare products. Within 2 years Saks Fifth Avenue in New York became the first Estée Lauder counter in the world and the cosmetics industry would be changed forever.
Estée Lauder understood women and more importantly how to sell to women. The use of samples to tempt customers, the creation of the first ever Gift with Purchase promotion, the introduction of the first make-up colour collection and above all, the power of demonstration to “wow” customers were all created by Mrs. Lauder herself and today are common best practices used by brands around the world. The list of firsts for the brand has continued year after year……
1953 - Youth Dew causes a fragrance revolution. At that time women did not buy fragrance for themselves, and Estée Lauder wanted to create a fragrance that women could wear everyday and buy for themselves…so she created a bath oil that doubled as a perfume.
1956 - Re-Nutriv introduced the first ever luxury skincare collection. Retailing at the unprecedented retail price of 0.00 because Mrs. Lauder believed that women want the best in skincare…at any price.
